As a recently joined member, we’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the club, and provide some details on how our Interclub Teams work.
For those of you unfamiliar with interclub golf, it is very simply a collection of tournaments run each year by the Golfing Union of Ireland, where clubs play matches against each other, Ryder Cup-style, at various handicap levels. Whether you play off 2,12 or 20, there’s something for you within the 12 events we’ll be competing in (see table below).
To be eligible, a player must have held a handicap in the previous calendar year (in The South County or elsewhere) and played in a minimum of four singles competitions that year.
Each team has a non-playing captain who will select a panel based on performances in weekend competitions throughout the year, among other relevant factors. All categories of membership will be considered equally. Team captains are looking for match-winners, whether they’re long established members, brand new to the club, young or old is entirely irrelevant. It is competitive, and as a result, a very level playing field exists. At The South County we’re very proud to have such a selection policy.

After taking a break last year, The Lisheen Trophy Inter Club Competition for players with handicaps in the 16-18 range returned to the calendar on Sunday afternoon, and was keenly contested by 5-man teams representing Blessington Lakes, Dublin City, Dublin Mountain,Grange Castle, Hazelgrove, Killerig, Kilmashogue, Rathfarnham, Tulfarris, Woodlands and the host club, South County.
Of the 55 players, only 8 returned scores of par or better, reflecting the testing conditions, with the prize for best individual score going to Fiachra Keogh from Grange Castle with 39pts.
The Lisheen Trophy itself was well won by the team from neighbouring Blessington Lakes with a total of 140pts from their 4 best cards, and they had 8 points to spare over second placed Tulfarris.
